History of Forked River


The area that is now Forked River was first settled by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The Lenni Lenape lived off the land and fished in the Forked River.

In the early 1800s, European settlers arrived in Forked River and began to develop the area. General John Lacey, a Revolutionary War hero, established a forge on the Forked River in 1809. The forge produced iron products, which were shipped to markets all over the country.

In 1871, Lacey Township was formed from Dover and Union Townships. Forked River became the largest community in the new township.

In the early 1900s, Forked River became a popular summer resort destination. Visitors came to enjoy the beaches, fishing, and boating. The Forked River House, a historic hotel, was built in 1907.

During World War II, Forked River was home to a naval air station. The air station trained pilots for combat missions in the Pacific theater.

After the war, Forked River continued to grow as a residential community. Today, Forked River is a thriving community with a population of over 13,000 residents.
